After the plague—it was some sort of Ebola mutation passed from hand to hand and nose to nose like the common cold—life was different. More relaxed and expansive, more natural. The rat race was over, the freeways were clear all the way to Sacramento, and the poor dwindling ravaged planet was suddenly big and mysterious again. It was a kind of miracle really, what the environmentalists had been hoping all along, though of course even the most strident of them wouldn’t have wished for his own personal extinction, but there it was.

When the engine under the right wing began to unravel a thin skein of greasy, dark smoke, Ellen peered out the abraded Plexiglas window and saw the tufted clouds rising up and away from her and know she was going to die.

I looked down at my feet. A woman was clutching my right leg to her as if she’d given birth to it, her eyes as loopy as any crackhead’s. My left leg was in the grip of a balding guy who might have been a clerk in a hardware store and he was looking up at me like a toad I’d just squashed. “Jesus,” they hissed. “Jesus!”
The light was burning in my head, and it was all I needed. I reached into my pants and pulled out the gun. I could have anointed any one of them, but the woman was first. I bent to her where she lay on the unyielding concrete and touched the snub-nose to her ear as tenderly as any man of healing. The noise of it shut down Jesus, shut him down cold. Into the silence, and it was the hardware man next. Then I swung round on Mr. Beard.
It was easy. It was nothing. Just like killing babies.

also, ich hatte heute mein referat und war ziemlich nervös und bin deshalb glaubich auch ziemlich durchgerannt. aber es war wohl ganz ok. wenn ich das richtig mitbekommen hab, hab ich ne 1,7 bekommen.
ohne euch hätte ich das nicht so hinbekommen. vielen vielen dank für eure hilfe!!!
